Sowing seeds...working the field

Who would have thought that God would call us to the mission field! Although He spent 36 years preparing us, the call began one hot sunny day in February 2006.  As Tina and I rode in a truck with missionary Tom Smith, we found ourselves compelled to ask questions about how he became a missionary. Without knowing it we separately had an unquenchable need for answers.  Later, at the mission home, Tina and I sat and talked about Honduras and the mission field and pondered the question, “Could we really see ourselves living and serving in Honduras?”  A short while later Dwight Carr, BMDMI President, arrived at the home, got out of his truck, and approached us asking if we had ever thought about being missionaries!  On our flight home we continued to discuss the idea.
While waiting for our connecting flight in Miami we bought a book that would change our lives.  It was called “The Dream Giver” by Bruce Wilkerson.  For three months we weighed the pros and cons all the while asking God to show a sign if He wanted us to pursue the mission field.  Each day He would give us a sign and we would ask for another!  We would show Him a mountain that was in the way and He would remove it!  Finally, in July we realized we had been putting a question mark where God had already put a period.  We surrendered, and in 24 hours our house was sold!  We began the formal steps of becoming a missionary with BMDMI and six months later we moved to Costa Rica to begin language school.
The hardest moment was the few seconds it took to say, “Ok God, if that is what you want …we will do it.  We give you everything.”  God, as He promised, has provided from that moment on.  School was a new experience because it wasn’t just learning Spanish words.  As a part of mastering the language, we have to understand the culture and its mindset.  Tina and I have survived by remembering that even with perfect Spanish WE can’t save anyone!  We must continue to surrender and let God do His thing.  After all, it’s His show…  We just handle the paperwork!
